Wolverine Power Cooperative is proud to share another exciting step forward in building a stronger, more sustainable energy future, made possible through the spirit of cooperation.
From Collaboration to Clean Energy
Wolverine and Hoosier Energy first joined forces to support the restart of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant, reinforcing both cooperatives’ shared commitment to reliable, carbon-free power. That partnership created a foundation of trust and cooperation that continues to generate new opportunities.
Building on that success, the two organizations looked for additional ways to strengthen one another’s power supply portfolios. Through that effort, Wolverine sold capacity to Hoosier Energy and, in turn, Hoosier transferred its existing contractual interest in the Rail Splitter Wind Farm (“Rail Splitter”) in Central Illinois.
Wolverine utilized its new relationship with the owner of Rail Splitter, EDP Renewables (“EDP”), to discuss additional opportunities to expand its commitment to Rail Splitter. Wolverine soon learned that EDP had an additional 75 MW of power available from Rail Splitter. Wolverine and EDP moved quickly to add the additional volume and extend the term of the existing agreement.
Today, Wolverine is excited to have all 100 MW of Rail Splitter in its portfolio for the next decade and beyond. This commitment provides enough renewable electricity to power approximately 25,000 homes each year. This long-term contract strengthens Wolverine’s leadership in renewable energy, supporting compliance with Michigan’s new renewable standard.
The Cooperative Difference
“This is the cooperative difference in action,” said Zach Anderson, Chief Operations Officer. “Engaging with the team at Hoosier continues to create mutual benefit for our cooperative members, and the future is bright for continued collaboration.”
Adding Rail Splitter to Wolverine’s portfolio, the power of partnership is once again helping Michigan’s electric cooperatives lead the way with a clean, cost competitive, and rate stable future.
